Produced with support from the Fondation Paribas, this new album by the Manuel Rocheman trio shows warm tropical influences, no doubt the result of the trio's regular tours of Central America in recent months.
The CD features both original compositions and new arrangements of standards.
Among the original songs is the title track, Tropic City, with a distinctive nine-beat salsa rhythm. This is followed by Alligators, built around a seven-beat Latin tempo, and First Dream, which alternates between seven and nine beats, Paris Blues is a captivating bitonal melody based on the blues.
The trio has also totally rearranged several monumental standards : On green dolphin street and Sophisticated Lady (revamped with a samba rhythm), the universally known Mexican standard Besame Mucho, and the celebrated ballad I can't get started. An absolute "must" !
