Come Shine, his previous album, recorded with his American trio partners
George Mraz and Al Foster, once and for all established the reputation
of this French pianist who lacked the media and popular recognition his
shining talent had merited for several years.
If one critic could write of his first work Columbia ‘this album is a
fine lesson in understanding and refinement. [Manuel Rocheman] pulls out
all the stops, shifts into overdrive, and with a smile on his face
succeeds in whatever he attempts. As if in a dream’, what can be said of
I'm Old Fashioned?
On this new album Manuel again explores the trio formation which is so
successful for him, but this recording is special :
First, Manuel now puts on both his trios: his American trio (George
Mraz/Al Foster) which showed all its finesse and subtlety on his
previous album, and his French trio (Riccardo Del Fra/Simon Goubert)
which plays equally well on refinement and is higher on energy. The
end-result: exciting new encounters between the members of two
exceptional rhythm sections.
Second, this album is made with a live stereo sound recording, with the
group playing pretty much as in concert to foster spontaneity, the
freshness of the music and the warmth of the sound. No editing, no
tinkering or post-production remixes, just a tough choice among the many
takes for each number with different rhythm sections.
The outcome of these priceless sessions masterfully directed by Manuel Rocheman, who does indeed ‘succeed in whatever he attempts’, is this album which will mark its time and which we are pleased to have you discover.
